This book was written by one of the original FBI agents in the Behavioural Science Dept and he who was inaugural to actually interviewing serial killers to figure out how they tick. I initially watched the @netflixuk drama based on it which I loved. The book is much more factual and personal. There were moments where I really knew I’d have struggled to deal with the authors ego if I met him. Thankfully that will never happen so I can just say this book is very interesting, very insightful and not as gratuitous as most serial killer books tend to be. I really understand now how they can work out the possible age of an offender but make and model of car is surely witchcraft? #wishvintagereads
So guys I stayed in bed to finish this this morning because I have really struggled to put it down. I saw it had won the Costa Book Awards ahead of Sally Rooney and when I read the premise I knew I had to read it. And what a story. Well, a true story! About a little Jewish girl living in Holland at the start of WWII who’s parents sadly part with her to give her a chance of living. Her biographer is an Oxford Professor who’s grandparents were the first family she lived with. He tells her story with great care and respects both her and his own relatives in such a sensitive way. He also weaves into the story events of the bigger picture, what was happening in Holland whilst this little girl hid. And somehow he brilliantly weaves in the now. What is happening in our world that is mirrored in what happened then. Only when you read of her and the last family having to pack up their things and leave because the Germans are coming can you sense that this really could happen to you. This is an interesting, poignant and sad story and I highly recommend it #wishvintagereads
Here’s my #supportavintagedealer today @respectfully_vintage - the lovely Maureen. I’ve stalled near her a few times at @thefestivalofvintage and not only has she ALWAYS had stuff (Pyrex) for me to buy but she’s been kind and friendly to me. She is a proper vintage dealer. It’s just what she does. Her stalls look fantastic. And she’s great on the GRAM too. I can’t tell you how many American Pyrex nuts I see posting photos of what they’ve bought from her. Of course she sells much more than Pyrex. It’s just that, as my husband will tell you after last nights FaceTime, it’s pretty much my topic of conversation.
Today’s #supportavintagedealer is @retromental and she (Rebecca) is another friend I’ve made just because we sell vintage. She lives on the other side of the country and in reality I’ve met her once but we have a shared Instagram account @pyrexrebeccas which was set up because we have a similar love affair with Pyrex. Love/hate it definitely is, we do like to have a little bitching session about some of the patterns! I was going to put on a photo of Pyrex for her but that would be confusing as she rarely sells it. She’s a magnificent furniture dealer and you’ll find her at fairs throughout the year hauling her wares single handedly. I have so much respect & admiration for this woman. She works so hard and supports herself entirely. She is a total vintage legend! 👏🏻
So yesterday we had a moment in our little vintage community and I want to keep up the momentum so I’m starting a vintage round robin. Post a photo of a vintage trader you admire and tag them, they in turn should do the same, share the love and let’s bolster each other up! How far can we go? I love @vintagekeeley , she does so much and her insta account is all about everything including Bernard the pooch and her search for a gluten free diet. But her work in the vintage world is legendary and she runs some of the best events in the U.K. I highly recommend dipping your toes in to selling at events trading with her. Even if you have to travel 100’s of miles to do it. Keeley, over to you!!!!
So many years ago now I ran #aprilget2knowavintagedealer and found so many new online friend. Today another of my fellow dealers announced that they have to go find some other way to make a living because finding stock is getting harder and harder and the prices people want for stuff makes no sense. So on my @wishvintage stories I’ve spread a bit of love, shared some of my favourite accounts. These gals, and they are all that, work so hard because they’re so bloody passionate about the vintage. Please share the love! Follow and like and buy. Share your favourite vintage dealers using the #supportavintagedealer and let’s find some new friends and accounts to follow! Sending ❤️ to you all x
My reading year was hectic last year, about 80 books. On reviewing what I read it was really obvious that I hadn’t read many male authors at all. Which felt odd. So inspired by @whatmeworry_reads and his pursuance of an all female 2018 I am going to purposefully seek out male authors. Here’s a pile of what some of you recommend and a couple of previews I’ve been sent that I’m really excited about. I’ll keep you up to date with how it does. What male authors do you swear by?
Book review on the blog today is this magical piece of YA fiction, definitely worth recommending to that 12-16 year old in your life. Or you. #wishvintagereads #shadowscastbystars #catherineknutsson
The review on the blog today. A dystopian nightmare where image and likes are what makes the world go round. #wishvintagereads
