This weekend we visited St Mary in the Marsh, between Ashford and New Romney in Kent, to see the final resting place of famous children’s author E Nesbit. Edith wrote so many books including The Railway Children, Five Children and It and one of my favourites, The Enchanted Castle.
Edith had settled in Dymchurch towards the end of her life. She loved the area and was visited by many famous writers whilst there including Noel Cowerd who stayed at the pub located opposite this church, a 15th Century Inn.
Edith’s memorial is a wooden monument built by her second husband, Skippy, who was acting on her instruction. The current memorial is a replica with the original on display in the church.
This is a beautiful and quite remote area and driving down there you can well understand the peace she found down on the Marsh.
